"Music gives me an outlet to bring together 'community', but don't get it twisted; I don't make music to help create and foster new communities of people. Instead the communities that I participate in - for example the jazz community - help me make music which in turn brings people closer together.

Whenever I pick up an instrument - whether it be a trombone, trumpet, or tuba, or even my pen when I sit down at the piano to write - I am giving back to the communities that gave me the power to express. You see, I strongly believe that art is the expression of culture cultivated by community. Without community, there is no inherent culture, and without culture there is no art."
